Sustainability at the Aquarium.
Committed to sustainability, the Waikīkī Aquarium has taken measures to curb single-use plastics, installed photovoltaic solar panels and converted to LED lighting wherever possible.
Solar power
Rooftop photovoltaic panels offset a portion of our daily energy demand.
LED conversion
All exhibit and operational lighting converted to LED, lower heat, lower draw.
Plastic reduction
No single-use plastic bottles in our gift shop. Refill stations on-site.
Sea-water cooling
Our open-system aquarium uses fresh seawater pumped from offshore, no chiller energy required.
Native landscaping
Drought-tolerant native and Polynesian-introduced plants reduce irrigation needs.
Composting
Animal-care biodegradables and organic kitchen waste diverted from landfill.
Sustainability conversations
This ongoing video project, supported by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, features Aquarium scientists discussing the topics shaping Pacific ocean conservation:
- Marine Protected Areas
- Coral Propagation
- Marine Debris
- Invasive Algae
- Hawaiian Monk Seals
- Freshwater and ʻOʻopu
