Public-facing roles

Exhibit guides & docents

Help our visitors connect with the animals and stories on display. Docents stand at key exhibits, answer questions, share fun facts and run hands-on demonstrations like our daily tide pool touch tank.

Commitment: 4 hours a week, daytime hours.
Training: 8-week classroom + on-floor training in spring and fall.

Animal care

Husbandry assistants

Work side by side with our biologists prepping food, cleaning tanks, and observing animal behavior. This role is perfect for students considering a career in marine biology or zookeeping.

Commitment: 6 hours a week, early mornings.
Requirements: 18+, comfortable getting wet and dirty, 6-month minimum commitment.

Events & community

Special event volunteers

Help run Ke Kani O Ke Kai concerts, our annual Scarium Halloween event, Stars & Stripes, member nights and more. A perfect role for people with limited weekday availability.

Commitment: Sign up event by event. Most events are evenings or weekends.

Conservation & field work

Reef monitoring & coastal cleanups

Join our biologists on monthly reef monitoring dives, coastal cleanups, native plant restoration days and citizen science projects. Some roles require SCUBA certification; many do not.

Commitment: Monthly to quarterly, weekend mornings.
